Knopieskant - Tatting

 

Ek kon nie 'n Afrikaanse woord daarvoor kry nie, maar ek reken dat, siende dat die hele proses bestaan uit knopies, is knopieskant gepas. Dit spook al 'n rukkie by my, die knopieskantmakery. Dit word gedoen met 'n 'shuttle' of op 'n naald, rye knopies wat ringetjies en boë vorm om 'n kantmotief, of afwerking te maak.

I couldn't find a Afrikaans word for tatting, so I made up my own, and seeing that the craft consists of knots, I made up the word 'knopieskant'.  That means literally knot-lace. 
Tatting has intrigued  me for a while now. It consists of rows of knots made into rings and arches, with a shuttle or a needle, to form motifs or edgings.

Ek kon niemand kry om my te wys hoe nie, en die shuttle het my ore aangesit, maar anderdag kuier ek by Marilyn op haar blog  Room on the Left, en daar is die antwoord: knopieskant wat met 'n naald gedoen word. Daar is iets soos 'n 'tatting needle' beskikbaar, 'n lang naald met 'n oog wat nie wyer as die naald is nie en 'n stomp punt, maar ek kon nie een by ons Werksmandjie kry nie. Die lus om dit te probeer was te groot om te wag vir 'n bestelling, toe koop ek maar 'n stelletjie poppenaalde. Dit werk baie goed, maar die skerp puntjie kan 'n mens se vinger bietjie karnuffel, en dit kan 'n redelike bloederige spulletjie afgee. Gelukkig is my Brombeer 'n man met 'n plan, en hy het die naald vir stomp gemaak.

I couldn't find anyone to show me how it is done, and the shuttle baffled me, but the other day I visited Marilyn at her blog, Room on the Left, and there I found the answer: needle tatting! I couldn't find a tatting needle at our local haberdashery, and being to impatient to wait for a mail order, I bought a set of doll needles. They are a bit sharp, but Mr Grumpy Bear fixed it for me, and they are working a treat.

I watched some You Tube videos, and read about it. then I tried- knot to the front





en 'n knopie agtertoe opgesit vorm 'n dubbelknoop, en herhalings hiervan,

and a knot to the back, to make a double knot. Repeat,

 waarmee jy bogies of ringetjies vorm

to make rings and arches.

'n Nuwe vaardigheid vir 'n nuwe jaar.

A new craft for a new year.

Tot dusver het ek nog net blommotiefies met lekker dik gare gemaak, maar ek is heeltemal van plan om my hand nou aan 'n paar randjies te waag. Al waamee ek regtig gesukkel het, is om die deurrygdraad lank genoeg te laat,(dis baie meoilik om te bereken), en my hekelvingers moes leer om die draad reg vas te hou.
As iemand weet of daar 'n beter woord vir tatting in Afrikaans is, laat my asb weet, en enige wenke van iemand wat weet hoe, is welkom.

I have only made a few flowers with thick crochet cotton, but I am determined to make some edges with a finer thread soon. The only difficulty I really had, was to judge how long a tail I should leave, and my crochet fingers had to learn to hold the thread differently. 

Please let me know if you have a better Afrikaans word for tatting, and I would welcome any suggestions or advise.
